Top Wish List for Technology to improve the teacher/tutor role February 2012

Generated by the class of 2011-12

In no particular order….

Demystify technology & increase usability (for both learners and teachers) – take away the feeling of trepidation for some; technology is supposed to make our lives easier! Use more of the great free tools to improve the learning experience when creating eLearning content [examples - Screenr and Jing for creating simple screencasts/video demonstrations of software]; let everything happen faster too!

Improved Online Learning Strategies – a system that allows better interaction between students; increase opportunities for students’ willingness to engage.

Reliability - technology to be more robust/reliable; key is tutor technical support.

Digital Literacy Skills - what constitutes digital literacy skills are still not well defined nor universally taught; adult learners would be enabled to become more engaged with the technology being used; teaching adaptability to new tools.

Hardware - Give everyone headphones, Smartphones! The former to cut down on noise levels, the latter to encourage greater access to eLearning materials; give all students a tablet/ipad/Kindle on registration or supply text books on a USB (Kindle would also allow instructors to create & deliver lectures notes in Kindle reader format); USB ports on iPhones & iPads.

Cross platform & cross browser consistency/compatibility/accessibility/connectivity improving user friendly interfaces e.g. Blackboard 9 is fully integrated with mobile devices so that tutors could update/moderate on the go and students could do the same; seamless technology among campuses and systems; online courses to be comparable with all smart phones and screen resolutions; not all technologies are accessible to all students e.g. those with visual/hearing impairments; all the 'good' technologies could talk to each other and allow seamless integration between each other e.g. Twitter feed from a Clickers quiz to allow larger crowd sourcing; Apple Technology to be compatible with Flash; Articulate content to be viewed on an iPhone;
Universal cable from laptops to plasma tv screens for viewing & adapting teaching resources in different platforms.

Excellent (and cheap) broadband infrastructure for quick and easy downloads - it’s not rocket science and we were promised it years ago! Instantaneous downloads and uploads at the click of a button; Broadband suppliers living up to promises on download speeds!

Digital Identity - the idea of a single sign on to everything is very appealing, not having to remember multiple usernames and passwords; e.g. Meebo - apparently gives seamless login to several IM tools.

Increased training in ICTs for primary and second level schools; children encouraged and given extensive opportunity to blog, participate in discussions, create project sites, schools collaborate on projects etc. Also to include ICT as a leaving cert subject and a compulsory module in every programme, the latter particularly in the Further Education sector; lack of interactive whiteboards, broadband and up-to-date PCs in Irish schools.

Time/Training - increase time in class showing students all the exciting online tools they can engage with e.g. to learn languages; time to develop online learning material; requirement to complete a certain number of CPD hours as a must for all tutors; more time to investigate and produce more teaching and learning specific resources e.g. NDLR, Merlot etc.

Learning analytics/catalytics to better access the performance of the online course/ audience response system www.learningcatalytics.com/

More relaxed and flexible IT security protocols at work for accessing and downloading from shareware sites; self contained resources so that when published they contain everything that they need to run on the device that they are accessed from; more effective Pop up blockers, that don’t stop content you need to use.

A wish shared by Angela and Mark

Greater availability/understanding of VLEs.

Upcoming conferences of note

Thanks to all who contributed to this induction activity. Everyone’s wish list has highlighted a number of key ongoing challenges we all face as teachers today. As a tutor, my own personal wish is time, time and more time to keep on top of all the new strategies, tools, research, practice and networking opportunities out there! Oh and a Minority Report/Mission Impossible style interface for tutors to swipe virtual chunks of information across our screen as we type the ideal feedback prompts J
