PDP Resource Moodle

Moodle was introduced as a solution to the issue of delivering and tracking compliance training across the organisation.  Through Moodle e-learning courses could be delivered, completion of the courses could be tracked and reported on when required.

As part of the implementation I liaised with the external company who created a bespoke Moodle site.  Our e-commerce team advised on site design.  As the site progressed I tested and provided feedback while coordinating the large amounts of data required.

Since implementation we have started to create and publish our own e-learning courses using articulate.  Departments across the organisation see the value of delivering training through e-learning and have begun to implement training through e-learning for topics other than compliance.  Employees also see the value of completing training through e-learning as they no longer need to travel to training seminars and can complete training at a time that suits their work schedules.  In addition they have full access to their training records and can keep track of their annual mandatory compliance training requirements.  As part of my own development I have upgraded my PowerPoint skills and learnt how to use articulate.

Moodle has had a significant impact on how and when training is delivered and yet we are aware now that it is not being used to its full potential.  This year an upgrade to the network will allow us to deliver training content through other formats such as video, webinars and podcasts.   We also need to look at how Moodle can help with collaboration. My knowledge needs to be updated on what can be achieved.

The Msc has provided me with much to reflect on when it comes to instructional design.  Using models such as ADDIE provide a structure to follow when designing courses.  Creating storyboards provide a forum for discussion with subject matter experts allowing us to deal with expectations and to clarify any ambiguities.  I realise the need for constant testing and evaluation of courses, listening to feedback from employees on how they are interacting with each course and new design.   As we progress to future modules such as supporting Virtual communities and Trends in e-learning I’m confident they will also provide much to reflect on how Moodle is used to deliver learning across the organisation in the future.
